Joseph Markowitz concentrates
his practice in complex commercial litigation, having substantial experience handling
matters in the areas of intellectual property (including representing a party in
a patent case before the
United
StatesSupreme Court), products liability, commercial law, employment discrimination, entertainment
law and bankruptcy-related litigation.
Joe was born in
New York City
in 1954. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from
Columbia University
in 1976, and a Juris Doctor, with honors, from the University of Chicago Law School
in 1979. He was an associate editor of the
University of Chicago
Law Review
, and a member of the Order of the Coif. Joe was a law clerk for the Honorable Bernard
M. Decker of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
Joe is a member of the bars of the states of

York
and

, and a number of federal courts.

Wen Liu was formerly Of Counsel
in the
Los Angeles
office of Morrison & Foerster where he was engaged in an intellectual property
practice that included counseling, due diligence, procurement, exploitation, enforcement,
licensing of domestic and foreign intellectual property rights, and litigation support.
Wen continues to practice in the same areas at his new firm. Prior to joining Morrison
& Foerster, Wen served as Intellectual Property Counsel for IBM in
China
and
Hong
Kong
, Senior Attorney at Beckman Instruments, Inc., and was associated with Irell &
Manella LLP and Spensley Horn Jubas & Lubitz. His clients have ranged from major
international corporations to start-ups and emerging companies.
Wen has particular expertise with
intellectual property issues involving information processing systems and peripherals,
computer hardware and software, graphical user interfaces, display technologies,
photonics, opto-electronics, micromachines, imaging technologies, mechanical and
robotic devices, telecommunications, wireless and broadband data communications,
new media, the Internet, business processes, content-based materials, and signal
and image processing. In addition, Wen is experienced with the intellectual property
issues surrounding medical devices and analytical and diagnostic instruments. He
has successfully managed patent and trademark prosecution matters, anti-infringement
activities and related litigation.
Wen earned a Joint B.S., with Honors,
in Engineering and Applied Science, and M.S. in Aeronautics in 1980 from the California
Institute of Technology, where he was elected a Tau Beta Pi member. He received
an M.S. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
in 1982 and a J.D. from the
University
of
California

Los Angeles
, in 1986. Wen was a judicial extern for the Honorable Robert M. Takasugi in the
United States District Court for the Central District of California. Wen is a member
of the California Bar and is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark
Office.
Wen has conducted intellectual property
programs sponsored by domestic and international organizations such as the State
Bar of California, the China Ministry of Electronics Industry, the China Patent
Office, the Asia Pacific Intellectual Property Association of Taiwan, the Photonics
Industry & Technology Development Association of Taiwan, the National Computer
Board of Singapore, the National Science and Technology Board of Singapore, the
National University of Singapore Law Faculty, and the Singapore Nanyang Technology
University.
Wen is fluent in written and spoken Chinese (Cantonese
and Putonghua).
